This is an Antique / Vintage English 1920s Garden Line Layout Reel with Line and Pin.
At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.
Among the items from England referenced about are four listings for iron garden line layout reels that were purchased together. PLEASE NOTE that the reels are being listed individually. However, in case you are viewing one or more of these listings while all four are still available I included a photo of all four laid out together so you will have a better idea of the relative sizes and will be better able to consider the variations in design and appearance. That photo is for reference ONLY; each of the four listings is for a single reel. These listings are designated # 1of4 through 4of4 in the listing titles, and correspondingly labeled in the comparison photo.
The information we received on these reels is that three of them are circa 1920s, and the fourth, the black one designated # 3of4, is circa 1940s /1950s. The latter is vintage; I listed the 1920s winders as antique / vintage since they are probably just a few years from being formally antique. We do not have any other knowledge as to the accuracy of these age attributions.
The reels have varying amounts of line / rope that appear to be made from natural fibers of varying weights. I am opting not to unwind the line to determine the length of the line or to show the empty reel.
This listing is for reel #4of4.
The maximum height of the piece from the top of the ring to the point of the spike is 14 1/2". The reel is 7 1/2" wide and 7" high due to the presence of a ball shaped winder handle on one side on top and a flat winding handle on the bottom of the other side of the top bar to facilitate winding with a two handed motion. The reel is mounted on the spike so that it is free to turn. The pin to anchor the other end of the line is 8" long.
For US buyers be sure to choose whichever of the two shipping options is lower to your zipcode.
The wider is a quite primitive piece, but it is in fairly good condition considering its age and usage, The spike has a slight bend 4" from the tip as seen, and the pin has a bend near the end as well as seen. There is a variable patination of the iron, including a light to moderate patina of rust on the lower part of the spike.
The line / cord appears to be in good used condition.
The garden reel is offered as found / as seen / as described.
