What is Dong-Son Culture - Vietnamese Bronze Age ? (Source Wikipedia)

The chronology of Dong Son culture is said to be the 7th century B.C and ending at the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, divided into 3 stages:

- The early stage of Dong Son culture (7th – 6th centuries B.C) was developed as resulted on the previous cultures, almost distributed in the mountainous areas, midland and deltas.

- The middle stage of Dong Son culture (5th – 3rd centuries B.C) was developed in large areas with extensions to the rivers and deltas. In this period, the economy of Dong Son was very progressive. It was time for bronze drums of Ngoc Lu, Hoang Ha, Mieu Mon to be appeared, together with the boat shape caskets and grave goods in materials of wood, bamboo...

- The late stage of Dong Son culture (1st – 2nd centuries B.C to the 1st – 2nd centuries AD) developed and exchanged greatly with foreign cultures. It distributed in the deltas next to the rivers and the sea.

The origins of Đông Sơn culture may be traced back to ancient bronze castings.

The Đông Sơn culture (literally "East Mountain culture", from the name of Đông Sơn village) was a Bronze Age culture in ancient Vietnam centered at the Red River Valley of northern Vietnam from 700-500 BC until the first-second century AD. It was the last great culture of Văn Lang (as Vietnam was known then) and continued well into the next Vietnamese state of Âu Lạc.

The Đông Sơn people, who are also known as Lạc or Lạc Việt, were skilled at cultivating rice, keeping water buffalos and pigs, fishing and sailing in long dugout canoes. They were skilled bronze casters, which is evidenced by the Đông Sơn drums found widely throughout northern Vietnam and Southern China.

According to archaeological discoveries in north-eastern Thailand in the 1970s, the casting of bronze began in Southeast Asia first. The Đông Sơn bronze industry has a local origin, 700-500 BC. This includes bronze axes, spearheads and knives. This was followed by daggers, swords, drums, and situla from 500-0 B.C.

The bronze pieces were made in significant proportions in northern Vietnam and parts of southern China in Yunnan. The Đông Sơn bronze items exhibit "remarkable skill".

Dong Son Civilization

The sophisticated Bronze Age Dong Son culture—famous for its bronze drums—thrived in the Hong (Red) River valley from the seventh century B.C. to the A.D. second century. The People from the Dong Son (Dongson) era, also known as the Lac Viet, are regarded as the ancestors of modern Vietnamese. Dong Son is named after a village south of Hanoi, where their artifacts were first discovered.

The Dong Son have been called Southeast Asia's most distinctive early civilization. The Dong Son survived by hunting, fishing and growing rice. They were also skilled metalworkers, producing unique bronze pieces, especially the bronze drums. The Dong Son civilization ended when the Chinese invaded present-day Vietnam in the 2nd century B.C.

The Dong Son culture produced a wealth of bronze items, including tools, vessels, ornaments, weapons, arrowheads, axes, and bells, as well as ceramics and beads. Artifacts from the Dong Son were first excavated in the 1920s. It is now generally thought that it was not the actual political center of the culture, but merely one of the Dong Son principalities loosely linked to each other. The center of the Dong Son culture was the central region of the Red River basin.[Source: Dr. Jukka O. Miettinen,Asian Traditional Theater and Dance, Theater Academy Helsinki]

The Dong Son society was an agricultural one based on the wet rice cultivation. Images of Dong Son warriors and their weapons are found carved on many drums. Many types of weapon were represented: cross-bow, javelin, hatchet, spear, dagger and body shield. These images confirm the historical setting of the Dong Son time as its people was in constant fighting for survival against the people from the North. [Source: Viettouch]
