by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.

Roderick Impey Murchison, 1st Baronet (1792 – 1871) was an eminent Scottish geologist. Murchison was born at Tarradale House, Muir of Ord, Ross-shire, the son of Kenneth Murchison. His wealthy father died in 1796, when Roderick was 4 years old, and he was sent to Durham School 3 years later, and then the military college at Great Marlow to be trained for the army. After eight years of service Murchison left the army, and married Charlotte Hugonin (1788–1869), the only daughter of General Hugonin, of Nursted House, Hampshire. Murchison became fascinated by geology and joined the Geological Society of London, soon becoming one of its most active members. Murchison studied the geology of the south of England, devoting special attention to the rocks of the north-west of Sussex and the adjoining parts of Hampshire and Surrey, on which, aided by Fitton, he wrote his first scientific paper, read to the Geological Society of London in 1825. In 1846 he was knighted, and in the same year he presided over the meeting of the British Association at Southampton. During the later years of his life a large part of his time was devoted to the affairs of the Royal Geographical Society, of which he was in 1830 one of the founders and four times president. The crater Murchison on the Moon and at least fifteen geographical locations on Earth are named after him.

This poster is a high quality "giclee" reproduction of the antique original, custom-printed on Heavyweight Matt Coated art paper 230gsm (more of a thin card density). We use the latest UltraChromeHDX pigment inks which guarantee 60 years of colour  permanence (up to 200 years fade-proof for colour prints).

This poster is suitable for mounting and framing, as well as direct display on a wall.

Please note that our reproduction posters are made to order and every print is checked before posting. The images we use in most cases are scans of the antique originals, professionally restored in order to remove the most evident stains, folds, tears and other damage.  We strive to balance the restoration and saving the overall integrity and antique look of the original.

There will be no watermark on your image but there might be a white border depending on aspect ratio of the original. Please note that when a large antique original is reduced to a smaller size print some text may not be readable. Please check our measurements: every poster has it's own aspect ratio same as original and printed exactly as pictured.

Prints up to A4 are placed in transparent sleeve and posted in cardboard-backed envelope, unless posted together with a larger poster. All posters larger then A4 are rolled in transparent plastic or acid-free tissue paper and placed in heavy-duty postal tube for dispatch / delivery. We do not ship posters folded.
