An ancient Chinese Eastern Han dynasty terracotta figure of a farmer, likely from Sichuan province and dating to 25 – 220 AD.
Standing at almost four feet tall, this decorative sculpture towers over most terracotta figures produced during the Han Dynasty. The features are simple and rustic, with prominent ears but an engaging smile that suggests this individual is content with his lot in life. He is shown wearing a flat cap and the humble attire of a farmer, tied with a belt at the waist. Clutching his agricultural tools, there is a strong sense of personality about him.
The subjects of Han sculpture encompass virtually every aspect of life and provide visual documents of the nature of Han civilisation. There is something innately understandable about this image, though the features and clothing are somewhat alien, the expression and the scene of a working man holding his tools is relatable even to our modern eyes. The effect is tangible, the fact that this figure is over 1500 years old briefly melts away, allowing a fleeting moment of connection with the distant past.
An Oxford Authentication Thermoluminescence test accompanies this piece, which scientifically dates it to the Han dynasty.
Height: 48 inches.
Condition: Very good, both feet reattached, left leg reattached, head detachable, possible further minor restorations. Overall in excellent condition for an ancient figure of this large size.
