Khmer Sandstone Relief Fragment 'Reclining Vishnu', Angkorian Period. 13/14th Century.
Lintel Depicting Vishnu Anantasayin and the Birth of Brahma. Siem Reap Province, Cambodia.
Description: A masterfully conceived Khmer Sandstone Lintel Fragment of a beloved creation in Hindu literature and mythology, from a temple precinct in the Siem Reap district of northern Cambodia. The fragment depicts the majestic figure of Vishnu Sleeping on the Cosmic Ocean, outstretched in his slumber wakefulness, lying on the coils of the world-snake 'Ananta-Shesha', or Nagaraja, the infinite king of Nagas, while its three hoods shelter the gods crowned head. xxxxx
Vishnu abides in the Lotus fields attended by his consort Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty, wealth, and prosperity, kneeling at his feet, shrouded by a paired phoenix arched above , a deity holding two snakes while riding the head of the mythical beast Kala, celebrants, a devote mother and child, while Lord Brahma who was born of the Lotus that emerges from sleeping Vishnu's navel, is elevated in meditation on a lotus flower.
The multi-arm reclined deity is shown unclothed above the waist adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, wearing a short stylized Sampot, secured by an elaborate belt wrapped around his waist, and decorated in a draped fish-tail central panel. He wears a cylindrical headdress, bound by an inter-connected Angkorian style 'diadem' crown. His face appears serene, with arched eyebrows set over almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, wide mouth, and elongated earlobes with triangular earring pendants. His left hand holds his attribute, the club, while the right arm supports his sleeping head.
The fragmented is a good solid piece, in excellent condition, unaltered, with a naturally aged patina of mottled hues and color variations, showing normal wear, with minor degradation of the surface from age and the environment in which it was maintained.
